Abstract

The objectives of this project were to study the factors involved in bridge deck deterioration and to formulate and evaluate techniques to prevent or halt such deterioration. Part III of this study addressed the use of cathodic protection to prevent NaCl induced corrosion of reinforcing steel. Construction details of an impressed current cathodic protection installation are presented in this report. Data on stability and electrical resistance of a coke breeze asphaltic overlay are included as well as data concerning voltage drops through the conductive asphaltic concrete and the concrete. Also included are data concerning the polarized potential and current density required for cathodic protection of steel imbedded in concrete.
